The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday found itself under attack in the Assembly by one of its own.
During the ongoing winter session of the Assembly, former CM and BJP MLA Babulal Gaur questioned the state government's steps taken to bring down malnutrition in the state, an issue that has plagued Madhya Pradesh for many years.
This is not the first time the former CM and BJP MLA Gaur, who served as Home Minister in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government till June 2016, has attacked his own party led government in the assembly.
On earlier occasion, Gaur has raised the issue of tardy pace of implementation of the metro rail projects in Bhopal and Indore.
Babulal Gaur's questioning of his own party led government is seen in political circles as a measure to ensure a ticket for himself in the next assembly elections in 2018, something considered doubtful given the advanced age of the leader.
In June 2016, Gaur had been dropped from the Minister on grounds of being above 75 years of age.
Later, BJP President Amit Shah said in Bhopal that no such rule was in force in BJP, creating doubts on the reasons why Gaur was dropped.
Gaur is the longest serving MLA in the MP assembly. He has been an MLA for 10 terms since 1972.
On Tuesday, during a question raised by Congress MLA Nishank Jain on malnutrition deaths in Ganj Basoda area of Vidisha district, Urban Administration Minister Maya Singh replied on behalf of the Woman and Child Development Minister and said that the government was addressing the issue through a multi pronged approach.
Leader of Opposition, Ajay Singh also said that Vidisha was represented in Parliament by Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and was earlier represented by CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan when he was an MP, adding that it gives all the more reason the government should not be lacking in its efforts in tackling issues.
At this, the former CM Babulal Gaur cited the data from previous years and said that why the government was not able to tackle malnutrition over years was inexplicable.
Minister Maya Singh said that there had been a drop in malnutrition of 28.7% over the years. She also said that malnutrition had come down from the time Babulal Gaur was CM between 2004 and 2006.
